Kenai River Sockeye fishing begins in mid-June with Russian River bound fish, with the best time for this run being between June 10 and June 25. The late run of Kenai River sockeye is renowned as one of the largest returns in the state, typically arriving in early July and peaking from July 15 to August 15. These late-run sockeye are the largest in all of Alaska, with an average weight of 8-12 pounds.
Anglers can expect generous limits, with three fish per person per day before June 20, and an increased limit of six fish per person per day from June 20 through August 15. This offers ample opportunity to catch and retain these prized salmon. All necessary fishing equipment, including waders, is provided to ensure a comfortable and successful outing. Guests only need to bring warm clothes, rain gear, a fishing license, and their own food and drinks.
Prior to your trip, you will need to check in the night before between 5 PM and 7 PM to confirm your meeting place and time. You will also receive a text message with detailed information for the next morning; please confirm receipt of this text. The primary meeting point for all Kenai River Sockeye Salmon Trips is the Keystone Public Boat Launch. To get there from the Sterling Highway in Soldotna, turn left on East Redoubt (at the Circle K Gas Station), travel approximately 5 miles to the very end of the road, park your vehicle, and walk down to the river to meet your captain. This is a public launch and does not require a parking fee.
